Forest was born on the 28th Jan 2007 and has 4 litter sisters and 3 litter brothers all who are now happy living with their forever families. Forest was the chosen one to stay with us as we loved his out going happy personality topped with his very handsome and stylish looks.
All was well for 5 months and he was growing to be a very large puppy, but of coarse we didnt think much of this so we just put it down to his gentic make up. UNTIL, aged just 5 months Forest sustained an injury, complimants of his grandmother who rushed througth the gate at lightening speed, this sending Forest, who happened to be standing on the recieving side a tramatic blow to his left leg and hock. He was extremely sore for a few weeks so a trip to the vets was warranted. Metacam was given over the course of 10 days to take away the swelling. The limping seemed to have disappeared, but only for a short period of time. Forest on our request was refered to the Melbourne Vet Hospital under one of the best vets Australia has to offer, a Dr Wing Tip Wong. X-rays were performed.
Forest was said to have rapid growth and was to large for his age even as a rottweiler. At 8 months of age he weighed in at 50 kilos and not an ounce of fat on him it was all in the strength of his bone which appeared to be growing to fast.
We were given the not so good news upon his first lot of x-rays. Fragments of bone were breaking off and their was nothing at that point in time anyone could do except wait. It left us shattered, heart broken, our boy was going to become a cripple. Off home we went with heavy hearts. We waited a short while and again consulted with the Dr Wing Tip Wong. He went into detail and gave us an alternative but it would come at a pricel Price wasnt the issue so off to the vets we went again. This time they re examimed him and told us that they could go in and remove these fragments but it was a very delicate proceedure so again more x-rays. BUT more crushing news they had found that more bone was breaking off in other places so the operation was cancelled.
We were told that the next step was a very serious operation would be to go in and fuse bones together. GOD what else I thought my dear boy was in so much pain and at this point on 60 mils of Metacam a day, he had been on this for 3 months and our concern was the affect it would have on his internal organs.
It was at this point in time we decided to call it a day and made the appointment out our vets to put our boy to sleep. It made me physicaly sick counting down the days and hours then minutes, to the point I just couldnt do it. It didnt feel right, Forest wasnt ready to die and we werent ready to give up.
Forest was being crippled at a very fast rate so after much talking we decided to do the op. Again he was prepared for an operation but before the went ahead they decided to re x-ray a third time to make sure they didnt miss anything. I couldnt beleive it when they called and gave us the news, we were going to lose our Forest, there was nothing they could do as they had found fractures in his growth plates.
I cried and cried, how could this be our beautiful boy was literaly falling apart in front of our eyes and there was nothing they could do. Three times we tried and every corner every option was impossible. We had finally resigned to the fact that we would not have Forest for long as according to the vets 6 months to a year before he could never walk again. So home he came and enjoyed what he could.
It was at this point we looked for a more natural way of pain relief to help make his time comfortable with out filling him with more chemicals. We seeked the expert atention on a vet chiroprator. Under his guide Forest was put onto the Home-a-path medication called Traumeel http://www.explorepub.com/articles/arora which is a herbal form in a tablet that has the ability to heal from the inside of trauma patients. What could we lose. After 4 weeks of this there was a vast improvement in Forest wellbeing. The next step we took would be a real gamble. We chose to go ahead and have gold bead acupuncture www.himmlisch.com/goldbeads.htm were they insert 24 carat gold beads on strands into certain acupuncture points of the boby. This was done under a local and they were inserted into Forest's legs, hips and ears.
I was not sure at first but you had to see it with your own eyes to beleive, although it is not a cure and it will never mend Forest, the result has been a huge success. All his lameness has gone, once again he has very good mucsle tone in his hind and it makes me cry to see this young dog pain free when he powers round our paddocks.
No one and I mean no one will ever know the pain he had suffered, the tears I have cried, dreams that had been lost. We know we will not have Forest forever we are not silly, but we will enjoy every minute of every day with him while he enjoys and makes up for the puppy hood he had lost.
I love you forest more than you wil ever know. Dreams do come true and mine is to hold onto you for a while longer.
